Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has asserted that midfielder Enzo Fernandez will not face any difficulties when returning to the club after his involvement in a racial controversy.

“Enzo has clearly explained the situation and apologized. The club has also spoken out. So, there’s nothing more to discuss about this matter. They are all human; I don’t think anyone had any bad intentions. I have talked to Enzo and the players. I don’t foresee any issues when he returns,” Maresca said.

Fernandez got into trouble when he and some teammates from the Argentina national team sang a song with derogatory lyrics about the French team. The 2001-born midfielder livestreamed this scene on Instagram after winning the 2024 Copa America, causing an uproar.

Ten Chelsea players, mostly French or of African descent, unfollowed Fernandez, raising concerns that the Argentina international might be isolated upon returning to the club. Defender Wesley Fofana was one of the most vocal critics, stating that Fernandez’s actions reflected the widespread racism in football today.

Chelsea captain Reece James also showed sympathy for Fernandez. He said: “This is a difficult situation. Enzo realized his mistake and quickly apologized to the club, his teammates, and those hurt by his actions. I hope people can move past this and look forward. I have talked to Enzo and the involved players, but I will not disclose the details of those conversations.”

Fernandez is still on break after participating in the Copa America and is expected to arrive in the U.S. on July 29 to join Chelsea’s preseason tour. In addition to the risk of being ostracized by his teammates due to this incident, the Argentine midfielder also faces potential punishment from FIFA. The French Football Federation (FFF) has announced it will file a complaint against Fernandez and the group of Argentine players who sang the discriminatory song.
